Suggested Recommendations

The survey highlighted the determinants of high prevalence of dental diseases in school children. To achieve our target of zero cavity status some recommendations have been suggested since preventive care plays an important role in improving overall oral health, these recommendations will go a long way in achieving WHO target of Oral Health for all by 2010.

1)

Awareness about Dental Health should be part of school curriculum.

2)

Bi annual dental check up of all students of the school for proper follow up.

3)

Parents training program: The education program should be organized along with parents or for parents only for sustained motivation at home environment.

4)

Teacher training program for primary section so that need of good oral hygiene is stressed in class environment.

5)

School intervention

a) Brushing after tiffin break would go a long way in developing and keeping good oral hygiene so oral health kit should be kept in school bag.

b) Guided meals Menu for parents for whole week.

6)

Health Carnival by District Administration to educate people and their wards about various aspects of Dental health diseases, prevention and management through exhibition of posters, multimedia presentation ,films on oral health, fun activities, competitions etc.

7)

Mass contact programs to generate volunteers and spread the message.

8)

National oral health program should be implemented with more vigor and especially at school level.

9)

Tooth fairy education program should be adopted by school management.

10)

Grading charts in classroom should display oral status of the children and the children with good oral hygiene awarded certificates at the end of each session.

Conclusion & Summary

Since 98% of children in age group 3 to 18 years suffer from dental diseases in one form or other, we need to review our school health services and face the challenge to control and improve the status.

Though dental diseases are not infectious and not associated with mortality yet morbidity due to dental diseases is sufficient enough to cause school absenteeism and loss of study hours during visits to dental clinics. Due to phobia about dentists and his paraphernalia in clinic, children avoid prophylactic visits and land up in clinics in case of emergency due to accidents , excruciating pain due to deep dental caries, bleeding and swollen gums.

Prevention is better than cure and it's a proven fact that preventive measures improve and sustain the overall oral health of an individual in years to come. To achieve the target of zero cavity status we need to follow the five golden rules of:

Healthy eating Healthy drinking Proper brushing
Using trusted aids Visiting dentists every 6 months.
Our vision is bright smiles for brilliant career, so that the chidren smile with confidence for ever .
